Anna Park South Korea, b. 1996
Originally from South Korea, Anna Park (b.1996) spent her formative years in Salt Lake City, Utah where a university professor spotted her talent and recruited her for life drawing classes. This early drawing, a rare self-portrait, was made the same year that Park graduated from New York Academy of Fine Arts. She depicts herself sitting on a city fire escape, her face partially concealed by the metal structure. Her oversized shirt is open, revealing her underwear. The intimate scene perhaps captures the artist taking a break from a late-night studio session, or seeking quiet solace from the frenzy of city life. It prefigures the chaotic, Cubist-like compositions that followed, which drew on internet imagery to reflect the turbulent nature of twenty-first century life. More recently, she has introduced ink and acrylic to her charcoal drawings, addressing themes of agency and voyeurism in relation to women’s bodies through pared-down, illustrative portraits.
