Jagath Weerasinghe was born in 1954 in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, where, after his studies in Italy and US, he emerged as a pivotal artist and powerful voice in the cultural environment of his country since 1990s. The brushstrokes in his paintings are expressive, intense and show the artist’s feelings towards the horrors of political violence and genocide in his country. Weerasinghe is deeply engaged with local history and politics, using his work to show urgent concerns about the contemporary political order, offering a critical view of the forces shaping contemporary global conflicts.
