Mona Hatoum Lebanon, b. 1952
27 1/2 x 39 1/2 in
Born in Lebanon to Palestinian parents, Mona Hatoum (b. 1952) has been based in London since 1975, when the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War prevented her from returning to her home country. Addressing themes including gender, conflict, violence, oppression and displacement, Hatoum’s works across installation, sculpture, video, photography and print combine the geopolitical and the personal, often with a focus on the human body. In Over my dead body, which was first realised as a billboard poster in 1988, the artist’s scowling face stares down a toy soldier perched on her nose. In playing with scale, the male-female power dynamic is reversed and the threat of violence made to appear small. For Hatoum the image is a call to action, encouraging women to boldly oppose all forms of male violence, from domestic to warfare. However, its titular text invites a consideration of what the price of standing up to abuse might be.
