Working from her kitchen table, she uses scissors, scalpels and glue to carefully construct surreal and unnerving images that typically combine material from pornographic, fashion and interior design magazines. Linder’s works have previously been compared to those by Berlin Dada artists Hannah Höch and John Heartfield. Lightboxes are a more recent development and this example, a scanned and enlarged version of an original paper collage, features a nude pin-up model whose face and chest is covered by a bouquet of red roses. It references the Greek myth of Daphne – a nymph who transforms herself into a tree to escape Apollo’s lustful advances – while exposing the demanding and unrealistic standards of women’s beauty in modern society.
