A regular at London’s reggae clubs in the 1980s, Forrester sketched the dancing crowd, using the drawings as source material for his pulsating nightclub paintings. Aside from depicting DJs and partygoers, much of his early work references police violence against the Black community, a theme he continues to address. Since relocating to Cornwall in 2016, his paintings have become increasingly autobiographical, as in this vibrantly coloured work, which reimagines a childhood scene. The two adult figures are Ma Pets and Pa Clame, the farming couple who cared for Forrester for seven years after his mother emigrated to Britain. To the left, the young Forrester holds a small container, while behind him, the head farmhand, Godwin, clasps a handful of freshly picked nutmegs.
