Antony Gormley United Kingdom, b. 1950
60 1/2 x 52 1/2 x 73 1/2 in
Acclaimed sculptor Antony Gormley (b.1950) is widely acknowledged as one of the most significant British artists of his generation. His sculptures, installations and public artworks, most of which are modelled after his own body, seek to interrogate how the human form relates to its environment while addressing metaphysical questions regarding humanity’s place in the cosmos. The cast iron sculpture Drawn Apart exemplifies his approach. Presented flush to the corner of the room, the figure sits with its arms raised and legs drawn apart at a ninety-degree angle. As is customary for Gormley, it is cast from a plaster mould of the artist’s body and retains fabrication details, including the seam lines of the original mould. The ambiguous pose evokes feelings of unease (is this a body-strengthening exercise, or perhaps a torturer’s ‘stress position’?) while also speaking to the remarkable adaptability of the human body in response to environmental conditions.
