Oliver Laric Austria, b. 1981
In his multi-media works, Austrian artist Oliver Laric (b.1981) explore themes of authorship and originality in relation to contemporary digital technologies. His sculptures derive from scans of historical artworks and are realised using cutting edge 3D printing and milling techniques. Driving his practice is an interest in how copies and re-interpretations of pre-existing objects and images can shape our understanding of the past and present. Oceanus is based on Caspar Gras’s 17th century bronze statue of a Greek god from the now dismantled Leopold Fountain in Innsbruck, Austria. Laric’s work ‘remixes’ the neoclassical original, combining ancient iconography and modern materiality. Different printing methods and finishes give the appearance of marble and bronze in the figure’s lower sections, while the upper body is perforated with holes. With Laric’s scans freely available to download online, his reimagined sculptures can potentially be printed by anyone, raising questions about what constitutes the authentic in art.
